| Many people are shy and awkward about being the first ones on the dance floor. One of the most effective ways to please a crowd is by using participation dances, contests, and even games to get people out on the dance floor for the opportunity to mingle. As your DJ & emcee for your event, we can announce, explain and coordinate how the "ice breakers" are conducted. Below you will find brief descriptions of a few of the participation dances, contests and games that could be used in firing up your event & keeping it high energy: Participation Dances Anniversary/Marriage Countdown Dance Primarily used at wedding receptions. Invites all married couples and the newlyweds to the dance floor. The Newlyweds remain during the whole dance, while every 30 seconds or so in increments of 5 years (beginning with 1 year) we will ask the dancers to leave the floor should they had been married less than the time we announce. The dance will count down until only the newlyweds and a couple having been married the longest remain. The older couple will then share their secrets for a successful marriage. Multiplication Dance Everyone stands in a circle for this dance. The dance begins with a man & woman dancing alone in the middle of the circle. When the emcee says "break" the dancing couple should then pick someone of the opposite sex to dance with. This process continues every time the emcee says "break" until everyone in the circle is dancing. Snowball Dance Guests of honor or newlyweds begin this dance alone on the dance floor. After about 30 seconds of the song being played the emcee will call out "snowball", at which the couple dancing will select another couple and brings them to the dance floor. The "snowball" dance process is repeated until the dance floor is filled. The New Cha Cha Slide Party favorite in which the artist explains through the song the dance steps and everyone repeats as the song progresses. This can be led by the DJ, but most usually it is know by your guests and they start right in with the dance. Contests & Games Best Dancers Contest Three judges are picked for this contest which can be participated in by both couples and singles. The judges will choose the best 12 dancers by tapping individuals or couples on the shoulder during the first half of the song being played. Everyone who was not tapped during the first half of the song moves to form a circle around the remaining dancers. The judges will then choose the best three couples or individuals and tap them on the shoulder. Once the song ends, those not tapped on the shoulder will join the circle around the dance floor. As each of the remaining couples or individual is announced, the standing in the circle will applaud after each name/names. The volume of applause will determine the 3rd, 2nd and 1st place winners. Freeze Contest The DJ will instruct people to stand in the middle of the dance floor and dance in couples or singles while the music is playing. When the music stops playing, they must immediately "freeze" or they will be "out" of the dance. Limbo Two volunteers hold a 6 foot pole at each end. Guests will line up in front of the pole and when "Limbo Rock" starts playing everyone must dance under the pole arching their backs with their heads being the last thing to go under the pole. Contestants that bend forward, hit the pole or fall down will be "out". After everybody in the first line has gone through, the pole is lowered for a second round with the remaining contestants. This will continue until the last person going under the pole at it's lowest point wins the contest. TV Theme Song Trivia Volunteers for the trivia contest will line up single file on the dance floor with a judge selected by the DJ standing in front of them. The DJ will play a short segment of a TV & Movie theme song and the first contestant to name the show or movie will win the round. This is repeated for at least 15-20 theme songs and the contestant with the most correct answers wins the contest. There are many ways to break the ice and keep the party hoppin', and not all of them are listed here. Every event is different, and every crowd is different. Factors to consider when you are planning your event is size of the group, location, average age of the group, singles vs. married couples with children, distance your guests are from home, to name a few. All of these things contribute to how your function will be planned, so make sure to let your DJ know these items in advance. That will make for a much smoother and satisfying event for you and your guests. Keep in mind all events no matter whether a wedding reception or a birthday party have a beginning, middle and an end. The beginning usually begins slow, the middle is where the party kicks into high gear, and the end begins to slow down again as guests leave and people become tired. Using any of the above "ice breakers" will surely keep your event high energy with satisfied guests, and mixing the right DJ with the right mix of music only adds to your event's success. Music Tips When hiring a DJ, be very specific of the styles and kinds or music you would like played. This will help avoid any confusion and make the event a resounding success. If you request that your DJ take and play guests music requests, please keep in mind that those requests may conflict with your specific choices of the styles of music you want or do not want played. Decide ahead of time whether to let the DJ fill a guests requests if it conflicts with your music planner. This too will help fend off any confusion. Should you desire to provide music discs of particular artists for your DJ to play at your event, and if the disc is not pre-recorded but a burned disc, make sure the disc was burned a slow speed (either 2x or 4x). Professional DJ CD players because of their inherent sensitivity handle the slow burned cd's much better than discs burned at high speed.
